I occasionally try to write something poetic.
Below are a few of my attempts.
Thank you for reading.
A Personal Cosmology
In the Beginning:
There was Nothing, and there was Everything,
And Everything was in Nothing
And Nothing was Everything,
And God was Nothing
And God did nothing,
Yet, God did everything.
Then God stirred:
And Everything came forth from Nothing,
Void became space, and space – time,
Small became great, and great – singular,
Chance became certainty, and certainty – unknowable
Wave became solid, and solid – form,
Form became life, and life – Master,
And God is Everything.
And God does nothing,
Yet, God does everything.
In the End:
Everything returns to Nothing,
Time will be space, and space – meaningless,
Singular will be void, and void – all,
Unknowable will be knowledge, and knowledge – simplicity,
Form will be boundless, and boundless – line,
Master will be spirit, and spirit – oneness,
And oneness will be God –Everything in Nothing.
And God will do nothing,
Yet, everything will be done.
Know (for Carol)
When I am with you,
Know that I love you.
When I am away from you,
Know that I love you.
When I am gone,
Know that I love you.
In your lonely hours,
Think of me,
And know that I love you.
And smile.
Fishing friends (for Bill)
Two young friends
Sought mountain streams.
In morning-sun,
They fished, and dreamed.
Two good friends
Fast riffles wade.
In noontime-sun,
Caught fish, worked trades.
Two close friends
O’er deep pools gaze.
In evening-sun,
See fish, past days.
Two old friends
Time’s waters flow.
In moonbeam-sun
They fish, then go.
Saved
A white winged wonder floated by.
I wonder what was that said I.
So watched while waggish it flew nigh,
Then, looking leeward land I spied.
Oh, loving Lord lead on, I cried!
With palled, prayerful pleas I swore.
In painful pity passed hours more.
Beg forgive, forgive, forgive me Lord;
And favor, Father fetch me to shore.
But deathly darkness drank the light;
A devil’s demon devoured me with fright.
Woe, scared, swore sacrilege my plight,
Then, slumped silent, slept the night.
Bear-Major, -Minor moved to dawn,
While misery’s madness mem’ries did spawn.
Dreamt grieving, God’s gift now gone;
Yet gentle, guiding gusts blew on.
In morning, mesmerizing mists I found;
Bird melody made merry sound.
On rocky, rugged refuge I was bound;
My wretched, wrecked raft had come aground.
There, below, blue boundless sky;
I, broken but baptized, did testify.
Lord; through Thy thoughts, saved was I.
Saw, Thee through torment, and knew why;
A white winged wonder floated by.

On Yellowstone
Yellowstone Sensory
I see
a trout
rising to the fly.
I taste
sulfur
rising from the depths.
I smell
the smoke
rising off the fire.
I hear
wolf-song
rising on the wind.
I touch
starlight
rising in the sky.
Yellowstone Lullaby
In the eve -
The river flows melody,
The pines sway rhythm,
The wind sings hymn,
A Yellowstone lullaby.
To dream in the stars.
Church
Some go to Mecca, others to Rome,
Some to Jerusalem, for sins to atone,
To mosque, cathedral, and Wailing Wall weep.
To renew the spirit and with God speak.
But God isn’t found in the buildings of man
He dwells and is heard in the Yellowstone land.

Early Morning Walk in Paradise
I had to break from studying this morning,
So a walk to the coffee-house, two miles from home.
Blue sky, streaks of clouds, short-sleeve shirt;
Wisp of wind, the smell of bacon from someone’s kitchen;
the route through town, along Main street,
peaceful before most people begin their day,
giant hanging flower baskets on the light poles,
across the bridge over the Nooksack River,
flowing a bit high from two days of rain.
I arrive, greeted by beautiful, smiling girls, clad in green aprons,
set to make the coffee of my choice;
extra hot latte for the return trip.
A different route going back,
across the Nooksack along the trail that parallels the river,
then west along the road bordered by alfalfa-, raspberry-, and corn-fields.
Bicycles, hundreds of bicyclers pass me,
with numbers on their backs;
ducks fly overhead,
a hawk,
a bald eagle.
I walk in paradise.
